Lanzarote – An Island of Contrasts

Lanzarote is well known in Europe as a destination that benefits from all year round sun. Located just off the Saharan coast, the island quite possibly has the world’s best weather, with even the summer heat being tempered by the steady trade winds.

Many people will know and love the three main resorts on the island – Puerto del Carmen, Costa Teguise and Playa Blanca. Each offers something slightly different:

Puerto del Carmen

Is a paradise for clubbers, with busy bars and restaurants and fabulous beaches. It’s where to stay if you like action and excitemnt.

Costa Teguise

Is the family resort, complete with golf course and aqua park, and it’s fun and interesting for adults and kids alike.

Playa Blanca

Has grown as the luxury resort, with a plethora of high class hotels, and a advanced feel to it’s shops and the fabulous marine area.

But drive out of those three areas, and you’ll find a landscape of incredible natural beauty, much of it volcanic. The island endured a series of eruptions in the 17th and 18th centuries, which have created a staggering 77 coronas, and have resulted in parts of the island looking more like another planet.

Add in the green and pleasant valleys in the north, and some of the best beaches in the world, and you have the perfect formula for a vacation that will leave you with some amazing recipes.

Sports

More recently, the island has been promoting itself heavily as a sports destination, and once again the weather has played a part, meaning athletes can train all year round. Indeed, several professionals like Jenson Button, Lennox Lewis and several world class rugby teams train on the island every year.
